Kinky Boots At The Opera House Manchester

Kinky Boots has come to Manchester this month and I was lucky enough to get a press night invitation! The red carpet was out, the outfits (including some of the audience) were fabulous and there was so much sparkle!

Ladies and gentlemen, and those who are yet to make up their mind…. it’s time for Kinky Boots!

Based on the chick flick movie, Kinky Boots Musical features music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper. The story starts in Northampton at a shoe factory Price and Son’s. We follow the factory managers’ son, average Charlie Price from Northampton, (played by Joel Harper-Jackson), as he forms the most unlikeliest of friendships and a business partnership with Lola, who used to be known as Simon, played by Callum Francis.

The show is funny and loud throughout with plenty of big numbers! The choreography is fabulous, there’s some fantastic dance scenes especially one using a conveyor belt as the cast dance in the factory.

Lola and her angels were definitely the stars of the show. Their scenes were always big and loud with amazing costumes! Their dances were spectacular, full of back-flips and the splits! So much fun. Callum Francis gave an outstanding performance as Lola, he definitely brought the WOW factor to the stage.

The underlying message that shines through is to never be something you’re not! The musical also promotes accepting people for who they are, touching on masculinity and what it means to be a ‘real man’.

One of my favourite scenes  and song was with Charlie and Lola singing ‘Not My Father’s Son’. This impressive number was heartwarming and tear-jerking.

Ex corrie star Paula Lane gave a great performance as Lauren. She had plenty of energy on stage, she was funny and lovable and had a fab voice.

There is plenty of wit and sarcasm, fun and laughter, love and sadness! Kinky Boots is a massive show that’s not to be missed! It’s full of big numbers and lovable characters.

Kinky Boots is on now at the Opera House Manchester until 1st December.
