See Oldham in a new light as three of the town centre’s iconic venues play host to the borough’s late-night arts festival, ‘Illuminate’.
With a range of illuminative-themed performances, attractions and workshops lined up at Oldham’s Parish Church, Parliament Square and Gallery Oldham, there’s something for all of the family to enjoy on Friday 22nd February from 6 to 9pm.
Illuminate Parade, 6pm
A carnival procession of light from Gallery Oldham to the Old Town Hall, led by Global Grooves and a sea of handmade community lanterns.
Illuminos, 6-9pm at the Old Town Hall
See the Old Town Hall transformed with an amazing light spectacular marking 50 years of giant leaps since the historic moon landings. Acclaimed visual artists Illuminos have been working with local people to create a new 3D projection that celebrates and commemorates our link to the Moon, outer space and technology.
The Celestial Sound Cloud, 6-9pm at Oldham Parish Church (OL1 3UH)
Interact with stars in distant galaxies and make the planets sing as you dance beneath the giant Celestial Sound Cloud. This interactive digital sound and light sculpture by Pif-Paf Theatre will be suspended in the stunning and ethereal setting of the historic Oldham Parish Church.
Crypt by Candlelight, 6–8.30pm (Every half–hour) at Oldham Parish Church
Take a guided tour of the church crypt – the burial home of the famous Oldham Giant. Booking essential so please book your free place here.
Illumaphonim, 6–9pm at Parliament Square (OL1 1QN)
Make the Illumaphonium chime and interact with this dynamic and interactive, multi-sensory sculpture. Created by musician and inventor Michael Davis, the Illumaphonium consists of more than 100 illuminated chime bars, each of which respond to touch, to create a fun music-making experience.
Project Phoenix, 6–9pm at Parliament Square (OL1 1QN)
Global Grooves present a brand new collection of illuminated creations. Parliament Square will come alive with glowing gastropods, Bollywood inspired gigantes and futuristic robot stilt walkers.
Cirque Bijou, 6–8pm at Parliament Square (OL1 1QN)
The Umbrella Project is Cirque Bijou’s choreographed performance piece that features LED umbrellas to create a glowingly beautiful spectacle. Featuring members of the local community this choreographed performance of dance, light and movement will pop up across the town centre.
Sentinel, 6–9pm at Oldham Library (OL1 1TJ)
Sentinel is a captivating multi-sensory journey through the present and future effects of global warming.
A soundtrack of synths and drum machines, created and composed by Richard Evans, accompanied by Valentina D’efilippo’s stunning visuals, create a layered perspective on our planet’s most urgent issue.
Library by Light, 6–9pm at Oldham Library (OL1 1TJ)
Get creative with illuminated activities and crafts in the Library foyer.
Dr Kronovator’s Fire Laboratory, 6–9pm at Gallery Oldham (OL1 1TJ)
Wander through the gardens and witness a vista of flames and chemical reactions made all the more exciting through an evocative and informative soundscape. Dr Kronovator’s Fire Laboratory is a stunning interactive environment with ingenious fire installations for audiences of all ages.
Gallery Lates, 6–9pm at Gallery Oldham (OL1 1TJ)
Explore our current exhibitions as the Gallery opens late for Illuminate. Take part in free illuminated arts and crafts in the foyer and enjoy live music at Naked Bean café.
