FREE Half Term Activities and Events In and Around Oldham and Tameside

Half term already I hear your cry? It doesn’t seem like two minutes ago the kids were last off school.

There’s loads going on this May half term to keep the kids entertained in and around Oldham, Tameside and Greater Manchester. Best of all, this list below is all FREE actvities!

*MakeFest 2019 at the Science and Industry Museum*

The family ‘making and doing’ festival returns to Manchester’s Science and Industry Museum and invites parents, guardians and kids to find their inner inventor, Tinkertastic will run throughout the half term. For full details see here.

Monday 27th May

*Fun Half Term Activities in Royton*

Bullcote Park 1-3pm.

Arts, Crafts and games. No need to book, just turn up.

Celebrate Queen Victoria’s 200th birthday with a day of themed stories, activities and crafts.


Tuesday 28th May

*Shark In The Park! Story Walk*

Chadderton Hall Park, OL9 0QB. Meet outside the cafe at 10.15 – 11.30am

Join Oldham Libraries for the Shark in the Park story walk. Enjoy a reading of the Shark in the Park and even make your own telescope. Walk around the park on a shark hunt and join in with some Skark-ercise.

FREE but booking is essential so be quick as these events book up quick!

Free family activities take place during all school holidays. Activities run from 1 – 4pm each day. Face painting and craft activities at each session.

Most suitable for ages 4–10 years.

Children must be accompanied by an adult for all family activities.

All holiday activities are free with face painting for just £2.

*Fun Half Term Activities in Royton*

Royton Library 1-3pm.

Arts, Crafts and games. No need to book, just turn up.

*Greater Manchester Police Open Day*

Newton Street, M1 1ET 10.30am – 3.30pm. Entry is free, last entrance is 3pm. More information can be found here.

Join Sher-Duck Holmes and be a duck detective, find the rubber robber duck at the police museum.


Wednesday 29th May

*Meet Tommy Atkins: First World War Soldier*

Portland Basin, Ashton-Under-Lyne, OL7 0QA. 11am-3pm.

Have you ever wondered what a soldier wore, what he ate, how he lived, fought and died in the ‘Great War of Civilisation’.

*May Half Term Fun*

Spindles Shopping Centre, Oldham. FREE event. 11am – 3pm

The theme is unicorns and monsters – there will be free crafts, balloon modelling, face painting and an art area.

The green screen will make an appearance, so you can make magical photos! Look out for the cuddly unicorn too, he’ll be giving away a limited number of goody bags!


Thursday 30th May

Friday 31st May

*Accelerate: Oldham Festival of Transport Workshops*

10am – 4pm Drop in – free, no need to book

Art and Transport collide as the town’s annual car show is reimagined for 2019. Accelerate features displays of vintage vehicles, alongside SpareParts, the UK’s only festival of art, performance and spectacle dedicated to transport. The SpareParts Arts Parade will start at the Gallery at 12noon before winding it’s way up to Parliament Square. Expect a magical mix of mechanic, music and movement with an array of transport characters and contraptions.

Work with artist Rowan Taylor and join in our free, drop in, workshops to create wonders to use and wear in the parade.

– Help us to make hot air balloons to be paraded around the town

– Make your own mini hot air balloon or pilot themed costume and join in the Accelerate parade.
